The Carol Jean Project

The Carol Jean Project is an homage to Gartin’s paternal grandmother, Carol Fitterer. Carol Jean was a quilt maker and Gartin is a photographer, so she tasked herself by incorporating both mediums in an engaging way to enable residents of Cincinnati, OH to have a voice in the project. Gartin posed the question, “What Does Family Mean to You?” in Washington Park, a vibrant public space in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, to over thirty strangers.  The quilt on display is the result of family tradition, contemporary practice, and social exchange.
